January is Poverty Month
January is Poverty Month
So, I thought I would take a second to shed some light onto the situation.
Poverty is a serious issue throughout the world but I'm going to focus on all of us here in the United States for a moment.
In the united states 29.8% of the population—or 95 million—live close to poverty, with incomes less than two times that of their poverty thresholds. In 2017, there are 46.7 million Americans living in poverty that is total population greater than Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Kansas and Nebraska combined.
That means that this country that everyone has made such a fuse about “making great again” is letting 141.7 million people live without being able to make all of their most basic needs because cash flow is an issue.
To make this harder, That number has only been growing and we have nearly 1 in 3 individuals with disabilities are living in poverty - and even worse, the disability-poverty rate is twice the rate to that for individuals without disabilities. That's craziness. At what point don't we raise disability and public assistance so everyone can have their basic needs met.
Forty-one million Americans face hunger each and every day because the minimum wage and social assistance is not enough to keep our low income families feed with inflation. These numbers are not just men and women that don't “feel” like working but people with jobs but can't afford housing, families that have lost their homes because of work shortages or health issues, these are people who are just struggling to keep afloat during a silent depression with little to no acknowledgement from our government. If we think about being low income and hunger as most of us experience it, as a temporary situation but for a largely growing percent of people this is a consistent state because of the low minimum wages.
It's truly sad that corporate greed has and is continuing to break down such a beautiful country. ...word vomit over...
